This is another stored piece of floral jacquard that needed to be brought out from beneath the shadows of my cutting table. With over 25 storage containers filled with all sorts of swatches, offcuts, and sampling pieces, constructing a coat is not unlike piecing together a large fabric jigsaw. I start by throwing the fabric across the cutting table, where I begin to build up an assorted group of possible linings and trimmings from storage that I think will enhance the coat’s story. In this case, I chose a gorgeous floral red jacquard outer. I decide on a swing design, then select the lining—a plain poly lining, which I sew a fluoro watermelon cotton lace over for an extra pop of colour. With its portrait inside, my vision of a ‘Winter Garden’ is complete.
